Winter
proves tasty
in Europe
I SPENT THE WINTER in Vilnius, Lithuania, far enough north so
mid-summer nights don’t get completely dark, and winter days have only
a few hours of light. In dark, cold December, my sister arrived from Italy, and
took out a small can of olive oil from her luggage. The taste of the oil (on
good Lithuanian bread) transported me in my heart back to sunny olive groves.
