Football playoff matchups announced for UHS, MHS

MORGANTOWN — The WVSSAC high school football playoff ratings were made official Nov. 5, with both University and Morgantown making the final cut.

The No. 3 Hawks made the postseason for the second-straight year following a 10-0 regular season and will host No. 14 Spring Mills at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10, at Mylan Pharmeceuticals Stadium.

“They’re a carbon-copy of us,” head coach John Kelley said. “They’re a spread team with a lot of athletes and speed. They have good size up front on both [offense and defense] and they’re mobile. They run the ball more than we do with the quarterback running a lot. Definite handful.”

The No. 15 Mohigans, which were one of two teams (St. Albans) to make the postseason at 4-6, will travel to No. 2 Martinsburg for the second time this season. The Bulldogs took the first meeting, 51-7.

Morgantown faced Martinsburg in last year’s state semifinals, a 51-0 Bulldogs’ win.

“I’m proud of what these guys have accomplished this year,” head coach Matt Lacy said. “We’ve had a lot of adversity with injuries and playing a tough schedule, but all it takes is one game to change our season. We understand the task at hand and how good Martinsburg is, but we have to play Morgantown football and do the little things right. We can’t give up big plays and expect to win over there. When given the opportunity, we have to make plays.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 10.
