Prep roundup: Friend scores 31 to lead PHS

KINGWOOD — After surviving a slow start, the Knights avenged a 20-point loss from earlier this season.

Makenzie Friend missed her career high by one point and finished with 31 and Taylor Mayne added 15 to lead the Knights to a 60-49 victory against Fort Hill (Md.) on Jan. 26.

The Knights used a 19-14 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, which came from spreading the floor and forcing Fort Hill to foul.

In the final four minutes, PHS was a perfect 12 of 12 from the foul line.

Preston (10-5) will host University, at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

CLAY-BATTELLE 49, PADEN CITY 27

BLACKSVILLE — Rylee Barnette scored 11 and Haley Barr added 10 to lead the Cee-Bees.

Clay-Battelle’s defense was the difference, holding Paden City to single digits in scoring until the third quarter.

Barnette hit three of the Cee-Bee’s eight 3-pointers in the game.

Clay-Battelle (9-5) will host Trinity, at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

CLAY-BATTELLE 68, PADEN CITY 32

BLACKSVILLE — Seth Casino connected on four 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead the Cee-Bees.

C-B’s Morgan Chisler added 13 and Levi Carrico added 12.

Clay-Battelle led, 31-11, at halftime.

C-B will host Cameron, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

CLARKSBURG — Liberty (Harrison) took advantage of free throws in the fourth quarter to erase a four-point deficit.

The Mountaineers were led by Dalton Westfall’s 23 points and Benjamin Oldaker added 13.

Liberty attempted 24 free throws to Preston’s nine. In the fourth quarter, Liberty shot 14 free throws, while Preston did not attempt one.

The Knights were led by Jacob Livengood’s 16 points and Corey Pyles added 14.

PHS (3-12) will host Lincoln, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
